I have spent the past several months recovering from a teaked wrist. I have not been able to make any pots but I have reclaimed quiet a bit a my scrap clay. I pretty much save everything that is clean. I have mixed in more plastic clays to by basic clay body. I am trying to fix a cracking problem that has plagued me for some time now. It seems to be a rehydration issue. I raw glaze my pots but the problem does not show up until fired to temp. The "new" old clay is in dryers that I moved into my workshop. It now ready to be pugged and stored. I have tried many premixed clays, but if you have ever thrown clay that has been mixed in a slurry then dried, you know it makes a really good plastic clay. It still smells like clay!

Loading the wood kiln

I fired the salt kiln a few weeks ago, pots for The Schaller Gallery "Vapor" exhibition as well as AKAR,s yunomi show next spring. Before I started salt glazing in 1989, I used primarily ash and iron glazes ( in a reduction kiln ). The wood kiln will have these as well as slips with brush work.

British potter Nic Collins has a show that opens tomorrow at the Goldmark Gallery Uppingham Uk. They have posted the ( full length) accompanying video on you tube. It is really really good. We could not make it to Minnesota for the opening, so Karen sent this to us in the mail. I found it hanging on our mailbox yesterday afternoon. Under a threatening sky!!! Our show room is about ten steps from the road, house about ten more, say no more. It is an incredible book!

Spring Workshop

I am giving a two day workshop at Santa Fe Clay April 30th- May 1rst. Please see their website for details. One correction however, I have not conducted wood kiln building workshops. We have built two however. One with John Leach , 1991 ( a gas/wood type) and at the end of the last century a Sukhothai style with Svend Bayer. This year has started off cold. Around -16 F. last night but no frozen clay or pipes in the newly reinsulated pottery. Happy New Year !!! Everyone.

Here are some images of the pots I decorated with my new brushes from Brandon Phillips. They are very nice. I highly recommend them. Also a couple of pictures of a yunomi being trimmed. Leach wheel in background is for sale, if any one is interested please contact me. I fired these pots last week and I'll post some photos sooner than later.

Work is almost completed on the workshop, I should be back making pots by the end of the week. So for now I have decided to show some work of the potters who have influenced me the most. Richard Batterham at the top, Svend Bayer, Clive Bowen, John Leach and John Reeve middle, Michael Simon at the bottom.

I have tried to post a thank you to all of you who have commented on my pots, they seem to just disappear into cyberspace. So THANK YOU! Michael mentioned Michael Simon, man, you just can't say enough good things about Michael. He came to N.T.S.U in 1979 for a workshop, and was just beginning to saltglaze at the time. Years later when I built my first saltkiln he was characteristically giving with clay,slips,firing tips, and most of all encouragement! Another potter that came through N.T.S.U who had a profound influence on my pots was John Reeve, but more on him another time. All the best, Scott

More pots and a remembrance

Michael Cardew died on this date in 1983. His pots were some of the first ones I really connected with,especially the earthenware. We were fortunate to be able to see and hold a number of them at Donald Potter's in Byranston,Dorset, UK. He had one of the large slipware cider jars with the wooden spigots,one of my all time favorite pots. Remarkable memories!

Late November we started refitting our workshop with better windows and insulation. The holidays and recent storms have slowed the project somewhat but we are back at it now. I work on a Korean style kick wheel that spins on a post set in concrete. I have a work table built around it that serves as a seat as well. The next task will be chipping the post out of the concrete dismantling the bench and moving my work area into the larger space. The old log building where I have thrown for twenty two years will be used for dry clay storage. I'll leave you with a quote from a North Devon harvest jug.." No art with potter's can compare, we make our pots of what we potters are."

WE hve been shoveling snow for almost two weeks. There was about 3.5 feet of snow across most of our place with drifts over 5 feet. I'll post some photos so Brandon won't think I've been slacking. All for now.

Thanks for the intro. Brandon.I learned to make pots at N.T.S.U (now U.N.T),I learned what it means to be a potter at Richard Batterham's pottery in Dorset England.I used ash and iron type glazes until I built my first salt kiln in 1989.After returning from England I wanted to simplify the glazing process down to a bare minimum.I presently raw glaze using mostly kaolin slips with the addition of a local clay and ash.
